Today was Fossil Fest! It was a small but interesting fossil fair with paleontologists and amateur fossil hunters from the area. The displays were nice. The vendors were cool and most of the wares were reasonably priced. One especially entertaining man did an educational program with lots of touchable fossils and a skull. You should have heard his impression of a hungry dinosaur! It was a long, rising "eeeeeeeeee" finishing with some grunts. He won a round of applause from the floor.
There was a fossil dig for the kids for 25 cents per minute. Nick now has a paper bag of fossils he can call "precious." Xander finished their "junior paleontologist passport," got all the answers correct (and it took him over an hour to explore the exhibits and programs to find the answers), and got a tiny prize. I loved it, because he had to write in small spaces on every single page and draw pictures and sign his name. It was several pages of writing with not one complaint from him.
I consider these things part of our homeschooling. He learned a lot and got more writing practice in one day than he usually gets in a week. It was a fun family outing. And it was affordable. We all got in for $8. Nice day.
Now Nick is taking a nap that he really kind of wanted after our outing. Erik put up the rest of our outdoor lights, so we will be lit up tonight! I'm excited. He discovered he is afraid of heights, at least on a rickety ladder. Don't worry, I spotted him, so if he came down I would have gotten a broken back too.
