Preschool Stuff

We have a great day today! As Nick might say. We started by eating oatmeal with chocolate chips in it and then getting ready to go to preschool.

Nick's homework was to draw a picture of himself. It was extremely colorful.
I asked him to plan what he was going to play at preschool, and he said, "Shells."
When we went, he actually spent a lot of time with the Moon Sand and a little bit of time scooping pumpkin seeds back into a pumpkin. (Other kids had been scooping the seeds out.) He also examined shells and began collecting all the same shaped shells and having me hold them.

During group time, he was handed a felt strip that was meant to be Mat Man's leg. There was a song during which each child was supposed to bring up their body part at the appropriate time and make it part of Mat Man. Nick refused. He stood up there in the middle of everyone with his cry face on. Everyone said, "Aaaaaawwwwwwwww," and the teacher didn't make him do it. He wanted to keep the leg. Another mother turned around and told me she could never get him into trouble if he was hers because of that face he makes when he's about to cry. I know. It's too cute and sad. But I did bring him into a time-out space until he agreed to give me Mat Man's leg and go participate in the next song. Group time is what he needs to practice. :)

This week's homework was to make a person out of these craft sticks and googly eyes. He has already done this and seems attached to his person. He took the guy outside and asked if he would like something to eat. Then he fed the guy dry leaves and grass.
He has also done puzzles, played with our Dinosaur Train file folder, played with Busy Bugs, put pennies on the piggies, squished his Wacky Sack man, listened to part of Pocahontas with Xander, listened to There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed A Bat with Xander, had independent playtime, played outside, had an outfit change, and read books to himself. Oh, and ate a whole lot of food. He was cooperative and pleasant once he was at home.

Xander and I went through today's checklist. He was intensely interested in D'Aulaire's Pocahontas. I like the book, too. After tomorrow, I will clear him to start learning the recorder. It will have been a full two weeks since his tonsillectomy then.

I have put out email invites to see if a couple of his friends want to come over this week. I've even invited a family over, and Erik wants to try his hand at making a Brown Sugar, Pear & Pistachio Cake with Ginger Buttercream Frosting for them. (Looks magnificent in the magazine photo from Garden & Gun.)

The reason for all the invites is that Xander has been holed up for two weeks recuperating. Yesterday he begged to be allowed to go outside to meet a little girl who was visiting some neighbors across the street from us. He wanted to make a new friend. I think he's suffering from cooped-up-with-no-friends-except-little-brother syndrome.

On Thursday, we go to Sea World's Homeschool Day! It will be amazing!

  1. I love the D'Aulaires books. For realz. Excellent choice!

I also love that you made a play plan. I have thought about doing that with my girlie girl but can't seem to get things together with the little man enough to organize much of anything these days. Oh, well! We'll start doing them soon enough.

I really like the stick guy. And Nick's colorful self-portrait. Isn't it great that he sees himself that way!? :)

  2. Ha ha, I agree about his colorful self-portrait. He's a pretty happy, confident guy. Except when asked to give up a Mat Man leg.

You will get to the play plan for sure. It hasn't been that long since he was born!!

Now I like the D'Aulaire books even more knowing that you give them a thumbs-up. :)
